Cool Packaging — Wipe Dispenser Redesign

The Clorox Company has come up with a brilliant idea that borrows from Kleenex — designer packaging. Putting something purely functional in a dispenser that you don’t mind having on a countertop makes a ton of sense. Plus, it encourages usage because of its accessibility.

Per a story appearing in Packaging Digest, Clorox has unveiled a new line of wipes that comes in eight designs which combine form, fashion and function to put cleaning within reach. In addition to redesigning packaging — from the sleek shape and wider mouth of the canister to the graphic modern feel of the designs, the Clorox wipes team also created a new effortless single sheet dispensing system that makes cleaning as simple as flip, pull and wipe, without sacrificing any of the disinfecting power of their namesake wipes.

As part of the redesign process, Clorox held a contest (see www.redesignclean.com). The grand prize winner is Chicago-based graphic design student Jonathan Girton who received the highest number of consumer votes for his white and blue floral canister design. The Redesign Clean contest also recognized two first prize winners: Stephen Martel of New Ipswich, N.H. and Ben Downer of Spring Valley, N.Y.

“In creating the canister design, my intention was to provide something tranquil and serene that people could look at while in the household every day,” said Jonathan Girton, grand prize winner. “At the same time, I wanted to give it an eclectic and unique look.”

Girton is an aspiring designer and illustrator who is currently studying at the Harrington College of Design.  For his winning effort, he will receive a trip for two to New York City where he will have the opportunity to shadow Macy’s creative team and enjoy a $1,000 Macy’s shopping spree.
