SCMF Musings: The Surprising, Delightful Magic Mouse 2…

SCMF-Meece-inPost
Over the weekend we tagged along as Annie did a project in San Francisco — assisting with the set up of several gorgeous Apple iMac computers — unboxing times three.

They now come with a wireless mouse that doesn’t need its batteries replaced. Just turn it on, do the Bluetooth pairing process and you’re good to go — that is, if the mouse showed up fully charged. If not, then you have a delay of game.

But it comes with a USB cable for charging? Can’t it just be used as a “corded” mouse until it has enough juice to be self-propelled?

That was our thought. Works for the PS4’s wireless controllers. It should work for the “Designed by Apple in California,” right?

Rewind to the 2013 Unveil…

At Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) three years ago, the meaning of the phrase, “Designed by Apple in California,” was unveiled in a short (under 2-minutes) video.

Below are the words (the copy) that appeared on screen:

If everyone is busy making everything
how can anyone perfect anything?
we start to confuse convenience
with joy
abundance
with choice.
designing something requires
focus
the first thing we ask is
what do we want people to feel?

delight
surprise
love
connection

then we begin to craft around our intention

it takes time…
there are a thousand no’s
for every yes.

we simplify
we perfect
we start over
until everything we touch
enhances each life
it touches.

only then do we sign our work.

Designed by Apple in California.

Okay. Surprise? Yes, the fact that you charge the mouse from its underbelly — which means you can’t use it while charging — shocked and surprised us. Seemed very un-Apple-like.

Upon Further Review…

Following our #SCMF instincts, we did some Googling around and learned something fantastic. According to Roman Loyola a senior editor at Macworld:

Apple has said that the Magic Mouse 2 (along with the Magic Trackpad 2 and the Magic Keyboard) are fast-charging devices; the mouse can get nine hours’ worth of battery life in about two minutes. So, in the time it takes for you to visit the bathroom, stand up because your Apple Watch told you to, or go to the kitchen to grab a beverage, your drained Magic Mouse 2 will have a charge that will last a typical working day.

  • fast-charging
  • nine hours
  • two minutes

Okay, now we CAN fully embrace those Apple feelings of delight, surprise, love, and connection.

Delighted with and LOVE the speed of the charge AND the removal of the need to replace batteries (Annie keeps a box of AAs nearby). We are surprised it charges THAT fast too!

The “connection” is really disconnection — since we don’t need to hog a USB port to charge the mouse. Just fill ‘er up and go.

So yeah, we guess there is indeed value to the “Designed by Apple in California” when it comes to that Magic Mouse.

Note to Apple: Please be more upfront about how wicked-fast the charging is. Have fun with it.

Show that mouse turtling or on its side with a back in 2 minutes (or BRB) sign.

Just saying…

That’s a wrap! Thanks for reading and, as always, #SCMF!
