Inside the BlackBerry Outage…

Research in Motion just had a really bad week. The service disruption that impacted most of the Canadian company’s key markets, including North America, Europe and Asia, and a big chunk of its 70 million world-wide subscribers, came at an awful time — as many BlackBerry users were being lured to the iPhone 4S (which became available on Friday).

According to The Wall Street Journal, the disruptions in email, instant-messaging and Web browsing—which forced many BlackBerry users to resort to phone calls and faxes.

Along with its story, the Journal had a very nifty diagram that show how the BlackBerry system works and pointed to what went wrong. Apparently a broken switch and an inoperable backup on RIM’s proprietary network caused the problems.

The good news is that BlackBerry service is now fully restored.
